Young Joni and Me

When I was young, I couldn't wait to be a grown up. Adulthood seemed like the most awesome thing. As I've made my way into adulthood, I've often looked back at my obsession with getting there with a bit of contempt. "What's so great about being an adult?" I'd say to myself. The grass is always greener, right?

I've been thinking a lot lately about younger versions of myself and what they would think of me now. So when one of my favourite web comic authors (and favourite tweeter) Kate Beaton posted a comic of her having a conversation with a younger version of herself, I felt inspired to get out the pen and draw my own!

This is a conversation that I imagine my 5 year old self and I would have with each other.

That last pane is a scene from Peter Pan, and my younger self is imagining she is Peter Pan. Apparently that is not entirely obvious (apparently not everyone is as obsessed with Peter Pan as I am).
I think all the versions of my younger self would be happy with where I'm at now, but they'd all have something to call me out on! I'd get a lot of sass from my younger selves, and I'm sure they'd all be at least a bit skeptical that I really knew best. Which, I must say, is fair enough. I'm not so sure I do!

I had a lot of fun drawing this comic, and I hope to do some more at some point. Though as you can probably tell from the total lack of updates on my blog, I'm rather busy at the moment. It's full steam ahead with the PhD. I want to get it over and done with so I can move on with my life. And that is easier said than done, but hey, it is actually getting done!

Hopefully you'll be seeing more from me on here soon. Until then... stay frosty peeps.

  2. Ah, yes, I think I've lost a few people with the Peter Pan comparison. I've just ordered the movie off ebay and I'm going to watch it again and then I'll write a blog about it.

But it's not all lesbianism that I would compare to Peter Pan, more like my personal experience. If you watch the L Word at all, Peter Pan is Shayne...or in other words, Peter Pan gets alllll the lay-deehs.
